We were delighted today to receive a visit by members of the Defence Forces, to present St. Nicholas’ Parochial School with the National Flag and a copy of the Proclamation, as part of the preparations for the 1916 Commemorations.
The Department of Education and Skills intends that all 3,200 primary schools will receive a visit, to prepare for a display of the Tricolour by students on Proclamation Day, March 15th, 2016.
During the visit today, the soldiers explained the history of the Proclamation and the Irish Flag to us. Following this, many of the children told stories about their great grandparents and relations who were involved in the war. One of our fifth class pupils even had a Christmas card from 1915 to show the soldiers. They were very impressed!
Finally, to end the presentation, everybody sang the national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann, together.
Teachers, pupils and parents alike, were all very honoured to receive the visitors, the Irish Flag and the Proclamation, to our school this afternoon.
