In Science, First and Second Class have been doing an experiment to try to see what materials will rot away in our environment and what materials do not rot away so easily.
Last week we put some compost into a large container and then we put materials such as an apple core, a piece of bread, a drink carton, a teabag, a crisp bag, some newspaper and a plastic bag, into it. We then predicted what would happen to them after one week and after two weeks. Today, one week later, we checked our container to see what was happening and to see if our predictions were correct!

We found that the apple core, bread, teabag and newspaper were rotting away gradually, just as we predicted. However……the drink carton, the plastic bag and the crisp bag were perfect……not good for the environment we think……
Check back next week to see what we find again!

When we checked back for the final time….this is what we found……

We realised for sure that plastic bags, crisp bags and plastic bottles should be recycled and not just dumped because they did not disintegrate the way the apple core, the newspaper and teabag did. Our predictions were mostly correct, and now we must spread the word!
